Exploration Geologist – Peet Meyer
Pr. Sci. Nat
Bsc.Hons (Geol), M.Sc (Geol)
Peet Meyer studied at the University of Pretoria and started his working career in 1990 with Anglo American Corporation as exploration geologist in the coal division. Most of his exposure was in the Witbank and Highveld Coalfields.
After 5 years he left to start up an exploration drilling company which was sold in 1999. He joined Total Coal in 2000 as Operations Geologist and learnt all about coal mining, particularly the joys and tears of thin seam coal mining. During this time he completed a M.Sc in Earth Science Practice and Management, specializing in the economics of thin seam coal mining.
His exposure to junior exploration companies started in 2006 when he joined Aquila Resources as exploration manager for their coal properties in Mozambique and iron ore in the Northern Cape. He left Aquila in 2007, at the same time Aquila sold their Mozambique properties to Riversdale Mining, and started his own consultancy. From then on he specialized in southern Africa coal deposits, particularly Mozambique, and was mainly involved with Ncondezi Coal until the listing thereof.
In 2009 he was appointed as Group Geologist with AMCI Africa until their successful disinvestment of Revubue and Minas Moatize in Mozambique. Currently he consults to various small companies in southern Africa and Mozambique, specialising in coal. He has written numerous Competent Persons Reports for companies in Mozambique and listed companies on the JSE in South Africa. His continued involvement in Mozambique is through projects for ETA Star and Minas Moatize.
